Many Pakistani business owners discover who owns their domain only when the developer stops answering and the site goes down at renewal time. Domain aur hosting kahan se lein is a fair question, but the more important one is in whose name. This guide covers both.
What is the difference between a domain and hosting?
The domain is your address, such as yourbusiness.pk or yourbusiness.com. Hosting is the computer where the website files live. You pay for each separately, usually yearly, and they can come from different companies. The domain points to the hosting, so you can change hosting later without changing your address.
Should I choose .pk, .com.pk or .com?
| Domain | Where it comes from | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| .pk | PKNIC, the Pakistan registry, or its resellers | A business serving Pakistan that wants a local address |
| .com.pk | PKNIC or its resellers | A clearly commercial Pakistani address when the .pk is taken |
| .com | International registrars and resellers | A business with customers abroad, or one wanting a global name |
| .ae, .co.uk and others | That country's registry and its registrars | A separate presence in that market; rules on who may register vary |
Many businesses register both their .pk and .com and point one at the other, so nobody else takes the second. Keep the name short, easy to say over the phone, and free of hyphens if you can.
Where do I buy hosting, and what type?
| Type | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Your site shares a server with many others | Small company sites with modest traffic |
| VPS | Your own slice of a server, which someone must manage | Busier sites, stores and custom apps |
| Cloud or app platform | Hosting that scales and is run for you | Modern custom sites built with frameworks such as Next.js |
| Hosted store | The platform hosts the store for you | Shopify and similar |
Hosting is sold by Pakistani companies, billed in rupees, and by international providers, billed in foreign currency. Local billing is easier to pay; international providers may have servers closer to your customers abroad. Ask your developer which suits your site and why. The platform choice affects this too; see Shopify vs WordPress for a Pakistani business.
How do I keep ownership in my name?
Use a business email you control
Create the registrar and hosting accounts with an email you will still read in years, not a developer's or a departing employee's.
Register in the business or owner's name
The registrant name is what proves ownership in a dispute. It should be the business or its owner.
Give the developer access, not ownership
Add them as a user or share access for the build, and change passwords after handover.
Turn on auto-renewal
Keep a working payment method on file and make sure renewal emails reach someone.
Keep a record
Write down the registrar, hosting company, renewal dates and where the logins are kept.
What does it cost?
Cost depends on the domain ending, the registrar, the hosting type and the traffic you expect, and both renew yearly. A full picture of website costs is in website development cost in Pakistan; our own starting prices are on our pricing page.
How does Operix handle domain and hosting?
In our web development projects, the domain and hosting are registered to the client, and we say so in the quote. Sites such as Hadie's Crust and Dawatnama run on their own domains. If you are unsure who holds yours now, contact us and we will help you find out. Upkeep after launch is covered in website maintenance after launch.
Questions people ask
Where do I register a .pk domain?
Through PKNIC, the .pk registry, directly or through one of its resellers. Your web developer can do it for you, in your name.
Can I buy a .com from Pakistan?
Yes, from any international registrar or reseller. You need a payment method the registrar accepts.
My developer registered my domain. What now?
Ask them to move it to an account in your name and email. Registrars have a transfer or account change process for this.
Is free hosting good enough for a business?
Usually not. Free hosting tends to be slow, shows others' ads or limits your domain, which hurts trust and search.
