You have a shop in Deira, a café in JLT or a salon in Al Barsha, and the search for a POS turns up card machines, tablets, cloud apps and quotes that look nothing alike. These are the questions owners put to us most often, with the short answer first and a longer guide for each.
Do I need a POS system or a POS machine?
Both, usually. In the UAE, "POS machine" normally means the card terminal from your bank or payment provider. It takes the payment and nothing else. A POS system is the till software that records each item, moves the stock, totals the VAT and closes the day. A terminal without till software gives you a card settlement with no sales record behind it; till software without a terminal makes you take cards by hand. The two can be linked so that the amount goes to the terminal without retyping. The difference is set out in POS machine in the UAE: card machine or POS system.
What must a VAT receipt from the POS show?
- Your business name and tax registration number (TRN).
- The date, a unique receipt number and each item or service.
- The VAT amount and the total in AED.
- The payment method, so cash, card and wallet sales can be reconciled separately.
A POS that prints this on every sale, and keeps a copy you can search later, saves the month-end scramble. Exactly what a receipt or invoice must contain can change, so confirm the format with your tax adviser.
Does a free zone licence change anything?
Not for the till. A free zone company runs the same POS as a mainland one. What changes is the paperwork for the card terminal: the bank or payment provider asks for your free zone licence and company documents before issuing it, and some providers work with some zones more readily than others. See POS machine for a free zone company in the UAE for what to prepare.
Will UAE e-invoicing change my POS?
It will, in stages. The UAE is introducing electronic invoicing in phases from 2027, with businesses appointing an accredited service provider that sends structured invoice data to the Federal Tax Authority. A retail receipt and a business-to-business invoice are treated differently, and which rules apply to you, and when, depend on your revenue. The practical point for a POS buyer: choose a system that keeps every sale as structured data (item, quantity, VAT, customer) rather than a printed slip, because that is what will be reported. Dates and thresholds are in UAE e-invoicing 2026: what small businesses must do; confirm your own position with your tax adviser.
Can the POS take orders from Talabat, Careem and the other delivery apps?
A restaurant POS should treat each delivery app as its own sales channel, so that the app's commission, the VAT and the kitchen ticket are handled without retyping the order. Whether that is a direct integration or a tablet beside the till depends on the app and the POS. Ask the vendor to show an order arriving, not to describe it. Restaurant specifics are in restaurant POS system in Dubai.
Does it need Arabic?
Receipts and item names in Arabic and English are expected by many customers and by staff, and Arabic on the receipt is a practical courtesy in any case. The staff screen can be in either language. Ask to see an Arabic receipt printed from the demo, not a screenshot.
What happens when the internet drops?
A cloud POS that stops billing when the connection drops costs you the sale. Ask whether the till keeps billing offline and syncs later, and what happens to the card terminal in the meantime. A supermarket with several lanes has more at stake here; see supermarket and grocery POS system in Dubai.
What decides the price of a POS system in Dubai?
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Number of tills and branches | Each till is a licence or a device; branches add stock transfers and consolidated reports |
| Hardware | Touchscreen, receipt printer, scanner, cash drawer and the card terminal are bought or rented separately |
| Integrations | Delivery apps, accounting software, loyalty and e-invoicing providers each take work |
| Customisation | A standard retail or café setup is cheaper than screens built around your process |
| Support | On-call support in your hours, updates and training are part of the running cost |
Starting prices are on our pricing page. For a quote, we need the number of tills, the branches, the hardware you already own and the integrations you want.
How should I choose, in order?
Write down your sales
List how you sell: counter, tables, delivery apps, WhatsApp, website. The POS must handle all of them.
Check the receipt
Ask for a printed VAT receipt in AED with the TRN and Arabic from the demo system.
Test the card link
Have the vendor send a sale to the card terminal in front of you.
Test a bad day
Switch off the Wi-Fi during the demo and see what the till does.
Ask about e-invoicing
Ask how the system will connect to an accredited provider when your phase arrives.

Questions people ask
Is a tablet POS enough for a small shop in Dubai?
Often yes, if it prints a VAT receipt with your TRN, records stock and keeps working offline. Check that the card terminal can be linked, and that reports can be exported for your accountant.
Can I use my bank's card machine with any POS system?
Usually the payment still works, but linking the amount automatically depends on the terminal and the POS. Ask both the bank and the POS vendor whether they integrate, and see it demonstrated.
Do I need a POS system if I only sell on Instagram and WhatsApp?
You need a record of sales, stock and VAT, which a POS gives you even without a counter. A simple system with order entry and receipts by WhatsApp may be enough; a full till is unnecessary.
Does the POS need to connect to the Federal Tax Authority now?
Retail receipts are not reported today in the way e-invoices will be, and the rollout is phased. Choose a POS that keeps structured invoice data so the connection can be added when your phase applies, and confirm the timing with your tax adviser.
Can Operix support a Dubai business from Karachi?
Yes. Discovery, demos, training and support are done online, and Karachi is one hour ahead of Dubai, so working hours overlap almost fully.
